View Poll Results: How good is the new Ubuntu 8.04(Hardy)
i am a very new user to linux, so dont take me wrong if i write something stupid. i have compaq 505tu model with intel graphics card. i installed ubuntu 8.04 with a dual boot with xp. initially i had some problems with the wireless adapter, but i resolved it ultimately, thanks to linuxquestions.org . but after i applied the updates, most of the problems were solved, but newer ones came.
#)initially in "sound preferences" menu in device tab(System>preferences>sound) "Autodetect" was default selection in each options(except for sound capture it was "ALSA" ) and the sound outputs were fine. but one day suddenly i noticed that the system gave no sound outputs. i went to the sound preferences and tested the sound options ,it gave following errors:
Quote:
audiotestsrc wave+sine freq=512!
audioconvert!audioresample!
gconfaudiosink:Failed to connect stream:
Invalid arguement
i selected "ALSA" for all options and the tests then were successful, but still i dont get sounds on clicking the icons and warning messages which i had set and got initially.
#)secondly, the default selection in "Appearence" menu(System>Preferences>Appearence) in visual effects tab was "normal" but even after i switched to extra the system was going fine, but after the updates and installing "compiz fusion" the process have become too slow and it takes relatively more time for a window to open. may be it is due to shrinking of memory due to updates or some wrong settings settings because the graphics card i have is compatible enough for all such applications.
#)Also, most importantly when i play a video in small screen or maximised screen, it works fine but very oftenly on switching to the fullscreen the monitor tuns black and i get no option than to cut off the power.
so, here i request for some suggestions and advices, any advices to solve any of the above problems are invited.
Thanx.

I'm sorry I can't help you with your first problem. I' not very familiars with sound settings.
However, it seems like you have a driver problem for your video. Can't say much from what you've mentioned. Anyway, try to install any driver updates available. If there are ant restricted modules on graphics, you may want to enable them too.
can u b more specific as to what driver updates i shoud i go for. i have "Mobile Intel(R) 945GM Express chipset family" graphics card. and now i am facing an even advanced problem that while changing the visual effests from "none"(which was my selection after the system files went slow) to normal or extra, it gives warning message as "Desktop effects could not be enabeled" . Please help me out of this.

You can go the System > Administration > Hardware Drivers to see what drivers are available there. If you haven't already done, enable the driver module for your hardware.
can u guide me thru as to how to enable the hardware driver for video or graphics.the hardware for video or graphics is not recognising there .the only driver i have enabled is the wireless driver, and is working fine.

Previously i had posted this thread in some other catagory but later i moved it to this section hoping it to be the more appropriate section .i am a very new user to linux, so dont take me wrong if i write something stupid. i have compaq 505tu model with intel graphics card(Mobile Intel(R) 945GM Express chipset). i installed ubuntu 8.04 with a dual boot with xp. initially i had some problems with the wireless adapter, but i resolved it ultimately, thanks to linuxquestions.org . after i applied the updates, most of the problems were solved, but newer ones came.

I merged your two threads together. In the future if you feel your thread is not in the appropriate forum please click the report button and let us know where you would like it move, we will be happy to do it for you. Posting the same thread in multiple forums is generally frowned on. Duplicate posts will be merged together or closed by a moderator.
yes, merging the two threads makes it easier for refrence for others. Anyways heres my update:
#)previously, as i had mentioned ,the system effects were not changing, when i checked my system thoroughly, i noticed that i had two versions of compiz installed, first the older one(that gave one extra option of "coustom" in visual effects menu) and other one (which gave "advanced desktop effect" option in the System>Prefrences>). so it was perhaps the conflict that prevented me to change the effects.
so i removed both the compiz versions and installed the newer one by searching and installing the following in synaptic:
*)compizconfig-settings-manager
*)fusion-icon
*)emerald
then the effects problems were solved, but video playback problem prevailed.
#)to fix video playback i tried this and alls well now with the graphics now.(But remember, This fix is not a permanent fix. It makes your CPU render the video, not your graphic card. The video will seem pixelated when re-sized at a higher resolution because the CPU is not able to post-process the video (and taxes your system resources). There seems to be no current fix for this video playback issue. This is a driver problem at the X-Server side.)
#) The sounds problem anyhow still prevails and i am still hoping for a better fix for this issue.
Try the various settings for sound, I think there is probably also a pulseaudio driver in
System -> Preferences -> Sound on each tab. Then use the test button beside each section..
