Problems with ATA controller on AX45-8XN?

Hello experts, I tried installing RH9 last night. When booting from the CD, a bunch of text looking to be hardware identification scrolls by, and then it detects the hard drive and hangs there for a moment. After about 30 seconds it says hda: lost interrupt. It does this twice, and then goes into a kernel panic. I've tried two hard drives, from different manufacturers, so I think this problem is with the IDE controller. The motherboard is an AOpen AX45-8XN with a built in ATA-133 controller. I searched their site and could not determine exactly which controller it uses. So my question is where should I look to determine if there may be a problem with the IDE controller on this board? I've used the board successfully with Windows XP, so I am confident there is nothing functionally wrong with the motherboard.

Thank you in advance for any assistance.

Open up your computer and get the chipset number from the IDE controller chip. Then go looking for problems with that chipset.

Jailbait, Thanks, I had planned on doing that when I got home later on tonight. Is there a site that lists the compatiible hardware on a distribution level? Something similar to the old HCL that you had to check with Windows NT. I checked Redhat's website, but I didn't see anything like that there.

"Is there a site that lists the compatiible hardware on a distribution level? "

I don't know. The way that I find out is to look at the kernel source. When you configure a new kernel in preparation for a compile you type in make xconfig. This gives you a GUI list of all possible kernel parameters. I look through the IDE chipsets for my chipset.

If you don't have the kernel source handy then search the www for your chipset and the Linux kernel. Chipset support is kernel version dependent and not distribution dependent, although Red Hat may have a support site listing chipsets that the kernel in RH9 supprts.
