Problems with ASUS P5RD1-VM network card

Hi,

We are haveing an issue getting onboard network card on the ASUS P5RD1-VM working. We are setting up a k12ltsp system/network (see k12ltsp.org.) This is based on the RedHat Linux Distro, kernel 2.4. The network card on the motherboard is a Reltek RTL8201CL, and the MAC chipset is the ULi M1573.

So here is our problem. The system will net boot but it can't go past the network driver detection of the kernel. The kernels that are in the latest version of k12ltsp system does not support the network card that is integrated with the motherboard. The driver is available as a source code kernel patch and only for the latest 2.6 kernel. The driver is not yet in the mainline kernel as the network chip is too new to be included.

I dont know if thier is a way to get the newer driver to work with the 2.4 kernal or if thier is another Realtek/ULi driver that would be compatible.

Thanks for any help you may be able to provide,

James

google that realtek nic model to see what module/driver it uses or check from terminal with lspci command, as root, for how it describes nic. Knowing exact module/driver needed is key. Then look for RH support for same.Or a newer RH kernel package. RH may have driver or module you need. Or someone on RH forum has experience with same nic.
Does Asus have nic Linux driver support?
Sorry but I can't help with how to config new kernel.
Good luck.
