Problems with ALSA and OSS. Sound working but very unclear and irregular

Hi!

OK I just set up Slackware 10.0 here, and so I got to work everything properly. Everything but my sound. Alsaconf installs the right sound driver and if i test the sound system in kde i get sound over the ALSA Sound System and also the OSS Sound System. But in both cases its very unclear and it sounds like a scratched CD.

Thanks in advance for you help

Hi!

If I start the gnome-volume-control it show one tab for OSS and one for ALSA.
The OSS tab shows that i have a Yamaha YMF753 and the ALSA Tab says that i have a Interl 82801CA-ICH3.
Actually i do have a Sony Vaio GRZ-615M. Unfortunately I don't know which one is the right one. But as a matter of fact neither one works properly. I can change between ALSA and OSS in the KDE Sound control and both times the same problem (as explained above) appears.

Thanks for the help

Please print what /sbin/lspci displays.

The Sony Vaio GRZ-615M is the model and brand of your computer not the hardware.

On-board sound in Linux does not work well because each manufacture programs the chipsets differently and they use different audio chips. You can try if OSS has a driver for your sound device, but it is not free. You can try compile all of ALSA latest drivers. The driver you should be using is snd-intel8x0. If that does not work open up your computer and find some chips. Look for chips that ALSA has on their list.

The easiest is buy a PCI sound card that ALSA has support for.
