My PC hardware profile:

Mercury motherboard with Intel 845 chipsets, LG 15" studioworks monitor, Celeron 2GHz processor, Samsung 52x CD-ROM, 256MB DDR.

Problem:

Ive installed WindowsXP and Ive tried installing most of Linux-s like RedHat 9, RedHat Enterprise Edition 5, Ubuntu 7.x, Suse 10.x; but none of these were able to bootup after installation. I installed RedHat 9 successfully but when my PC restarted it hanged up in the midst i.e., it haulted at "Configuring Kernel Parameters". Others didn't start in GUI mode, like RHED 5 started in textmode instead of GUI mode. Is there any problem with the graphics? Please suggest.
Im using GRUB boot manager.

Are you sure you installed a graphics system? If you did so, maybe you should try by typing in the console the following command:

That command starts the GUI and the corresponding windows manager (the one you have installed).

If everything is OK, that should do it.

If you have any more questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Ive used the command "startx" to start the GUI but in vain, it didn't work. Moreover, at the time of installation of Ubuntu 7.10 the screen resolution is perhaps 640x480, i.e., some items at the lower section of Ubuntu's installation window is out of screen area.

Is there any version of Linux which I could install with the above mentioned hardware config. Solutions awaited.

Ubuntu should work well with your current hardware configuration. Could you tell me what's the log that the startx command gives you when you execute it?
