Problem with sound setup on Debian x86_64

I have been trying to get sound working a Shuttle XPC system with Athlon 64 3000+ (2GHz) processor - running Debian Sid AMD64 (x86_64).

It appears to have the nVidia intel8x0 on-board sound card.

Alsaconf tells me that it has found this card:
intel8x0 nVidia Corporation: Unknown device 00ea (rev a1)

However, finishing the configuration yields:

Running update-modules...
Architecture-specific modutils configuration for x86_64 not found, using defaults
Loading driver...
Setting default volumes...
Saving the mixer setup used for this in /var/lib/alsa/asound.state.
/usr/sbin/alsactl: save_state:1163: No soundcards found...

So, apparently there are no actual drivers for this sound chip under Debian x86_64?

/etc/modprobe.d/sound contains:
alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0
options snd-intel8x0 index=0

and the following kernel modules are loaded:

[root@kenobi: ~]$ lsmod | grep snd
snd_intel8x0 35456 0
snd_ac97_codec 82384 1 snd_intel8x0
snd_pcm 95372 2 snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec
snd_timer 25160 1 snd_pcm
snd 57256 4 snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm,snd_timer
soundcore 11232 1 snd
snd_page_alloc 11144 2 snd_intel8x0,snd_pcm

and XMMS appears to actually play - but - no sound.

Running alsamixer gives me:
alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory

So...anyone got sound working on such a setup?

TIA - Bob

Hi! This is my first post on these forums

I have a similar setup; we have the same soundcard and we both use Sid. I'm experiencing the exact same problems as you are. I don't know what the problem is, but we can try to find out.

Here's a list of some random information:
1) Works perfectly fine in Windows
2) Works perfectly fine in Ubuntu 5.04
3) Works perfectly in Gentoo
4) Worked perfectly for a few days in Debian, but then it broke

Some recent activities:
1) I have compiled and installed several new kernels, I have 2.6.8, 2.6.11, and 2.6.12 installed at the moment. I have also installed and tried the prebuilt 2.6.12 kernel image.

This is all I can think of at the moment. Have you possibly installed (maybe compiled) a custom kernel lately?

Nope, running debian stock kernel:
2.6.11-9-amd64-k8

Also, you said yours worked for a few days. I have never gotten any sound out of mine.

Let me know if you come up with a fix....thanks.

Bob

Hi, I was wrong about the stock install, it didn't work either when I did a reinstall. I probably confused it with Ubuntu.

Anyway, I've given up on this one. I installed Kubuntu Breezy and it worked like a charm right away. I have no idea what the problem is, but I'm guessing it has to do with Debian/ALSA's setup.
