Unhappy Problem with sound in Fedora Core 3

I've installed RedHat Fedora Core 3, and i can hear no sounds. In FC1 sound card was working perfectly and it's still working in Windows.
system-config-soundcard correctly detects my sound card, but there is silence when playing the sample sound. Here's the command line output:

/usr/share/system-config-soundcard/system-config-soundcard
Simple mixer control 'PCM',0
Capabilities: pswitch pswitch-joined
Playback channels: Mono
Mono: Playback [on]
Playing WAVE '/usr/share/system-config-soundcard/sound-sample.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 44100 Hz, Stereo
Warning: rate is not accurate (requested = 44100Hz, got = 48000Hz)
please, try the plug plugin (-Dplug:hw:0,0)

Detects:
Vendor: VIA
Model: Techologies, Inc. VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller
Module: snd-via82xx

Please help.

Mistreated,
I fretted over the same problem when I upgraded from Core 1 to Core 2. In KDE look for the icon that looks like a speaker. If it's not there right-click on the taskbar and add the system tray applet. Right-click on the speaker icon and click 'Show Mixer Window" Play with the sliders until you have sound. (Gnome may be similar, I dunno, I don't use it) Hope this helps.

I am using Fedora3 with kernel -> Fedora Core 2.6.10-1.760_FC3

I experienced similar problems with my AC97 soundcard

These are the steps I took to get the sound working:

Note: You may find that steps (7) to (9) will solve the problem, so try these first !!

(1) Change my BIOS settings, DISABLE AC97 on-board sound
- Reboot PC and press Delete then enter the BIOS
- Find the AC97 on-board sound option and disable it
- If in doubt read the manual for your motherboard to find out how to do this

(2) Start Fedora with the AC97 sound DISABLED
- At startup you will be prompted to acknowledge the sound card is no longer available, select the option to REMOVE the sound card configuration
- Wait for Fedora to complete startup and display the desktop

(3) Shutdown Fedora

(4) Switch PC back on

(5) Change my BIOS settings, ENABLE AC97 on-board sound
- Go into the BIOS as per (1) and ENABLE the AC97 sound

(6) Start Fedora with the AC97 sound ENABLED
- At startup you will be prompted to acknowledge the sound card is AVAILABLE, select the option to CONFIGURE the sound card
- Wait for Fedora to complete startup and display the desktop

(7) Increase the volume control on the desktop (using Gnome)
- Look for a speaker icon on the desktop, by default it should be top-right corner
- Right click this icon and select Preferences
- A new window opens up 'Volume Control Preferences', by default the Volume (top) option is highlighted
- With the Volume option selected, look at the speaker icon and see if there are 3 curved lines on the right:
- Curved Lines = sound ON
- No Curved Lines = sound OFF
- If the Volume option is OFF then left-click the speaker icon and move the scrollbar to the + (up as far as possible)
- Repeat the process for the CD option and the PCM-2 option

(8) Insert a CD into your CD drive and start the CD player application, ensure that your headphones / speakers are plugged in and turn up the volume

(9) Hopefully, you should hear the CD -> if you don't then leave the CD playing and try changing the volume for other options in the Volume Control Preferences

Hope this helps
