Problem with setting up network card / network
 

Hello people,

I have a problem with my network card. I installed Suse 10.0 on my desktop. In the beginning everything worked well except for my Inetrnet connection. But after the first startup, Suse stopped loading and everything stopped. There was even no response on my mouse.

After trying some stuff, I pulled out my network card and Suse had no problem anymore with starting up. I think there is a problem with my driver, but Suse recognizes my network card well. It is the Digital DECchip 21041 [Tulip Pass 3]. Besides the Tulip Pass 3, the information of my network card is correct.

I cannot ping my router. It gives:
connect: Network is unreachable

Could anyone help me? Before I intalled Suse, I had Debian running and Internet worked well with Debian.

It may be related to tulip, actually. I had to use a different Enet card, no matter how hard I tried, the tulip wouldn't cooperate with SuSE 10. It may be a kernel issue, it may be a SuSE issue, I didn't care, I just swapped it for a Realtek 8139too, which works everywhere. If you don't ahve access to another card, maybe someone can help, but I tried awhile ago and tried a dozen things with many ideas from people here, and got nada to work.

Consider going back to Deberian :-P

Can't you get the source of the deberian driver and compile it on SUSE 10? Maybe if you do, and use that recompiled driver it may help....

I'm just a newbie with Linux (I just started using Linux SUSE 10 a few days a go, before that I used SUSE 9.3), so don't shoot me if my answer isn't one....

I do not have the Debian driver anymore. I am fed up with trying and as I remembered the same situation arose with Win 98 a few years ago. I just decided to buy a new network card, one that has no troubles with Suse 10.

So one important lesson: Do not even try to fix the problem with the Tulip network card, but just buy a new. It saves you a lot of time and frustrations.
