Problem with Santa Cruz Sound and video capture

I have a Santa Cruz card and Linux mandrake 9. Xawtv works fine. Zapping works fine. I installed mythtv and I cannot record any sound. I followed the instruction to select line in as recording source and mute it so I dont hear the original sound instead I should hear the recorded sound. (it should still record from line in. mythtv displays the recorded video a few seconds delayed from original video source so muting line in means i dont hear the audio source which would have resulted in severe av sync issues, however, i cant hear the recorded audio as well). I hear no recorded sound. Either mythtv is recording from a wrong sound device or it is not encoding sound. I checked lame so it is working. I think it is some obscure mixer setting or the Santa Cruz may be limited to recording only certain bit rates. I seem to recall ffmpeg having the same problem but I forgot how I solved that one. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks.
