Problem with PS2 -> USB Keyboard on Gentoo

Hi,

I'm having a strange problem with my Gentoo box. I have a PS2 keyboard which I plug into a USB adapter which I plug into one of the USB slots on the back of the box. When I do this and boot the machine what happens is that when I'm presented with the GRUB splash screen, the machine accepts the [Enter] keystroke to choose the default OS, but once Gentoo boots up, it won't accept any input from the keybard at all. If I take the USB adapter out of the picture and plug the keyboard directly into the PS2 slot on the back of the machine, everything works fine. I have no idea how to proceed. Does the make sense to anyone? Thanks in advance.

Ha! That's a reasonable question which I actually considered addressing in the original post. The reason is that the real scenario has the machine as one of three which share a keyboard-monitor-mouse via a USB KVM switch.
