Problem with nVidia driver on OpenSUSE - Open ACPI failed
Hello,
I have problem with nVidia driver on my OpenSUSE 10.3 64 bit. I have created following topic: http://www.suseforums.net/index.php?showtopic=48856 but apparently nobody from SUSE folks is able to help me. I was wondering whether somebody on this forum can give me any advise. Short description of the problem: When I use nvidia driver in xorg.conf, GNOME does not start because of the problem with nvidia driver. /var/log/Xorg.0.log shows this: Open ACPI failed (/var/run/acpid.socket) (Connection refused) Any ideas? regards Rafal |
Which Nvidia graphic cart do you use I use the nvidia 6200 serie and it works perfectly I just follow the instruction on the website of Nvidia web site

I use GeForce 8400M GS on my laptop and it works as well ;-) but what it has to do with my current problem ? Here some other things I observed: In BIOS I have possibility to switch of "ACPI APIC Support". I have disabled it. In Suse I executed this command; /etc/init.d/acpid stop When I executed this afterwards: /etc/init.d/acpid stop it gave me information: acpid: no ACPI support in kernel ok...so I stopped it again to be sure it has stopped. I tried with: sax2 -r I can read anything after I see something on the screen If I execute this: init 5 I see nVidia logon and again it hangs. After restart I checked /var/log/Xorg.0.log, and again it shows this: Open ACPI failed (/var/run/acpid.socket) (Connection refused) I installed nVidia according to the instructions they gave. Any ideas? What I can check or do in order to configure nvidia? is this problem with nVidia driver or rather something in the system ? regards Rafal |
If I understand you well you,re Nvidia cart 8500 GT I can overlook it off course but going through suse website where it mentioned the supported cart I can not find the 8500 GT

Does that error have a (WW) in front of it? I get a similar error about ACPI, and it has a (WW), meaning warning. Warnings usually don't make X fail, only errors can, they have (EE) in front of them.
I get this, which is similar to yours, but it doesn't make X fail. Code:
(WW) Open ACPI failed (/var/run/acpid.socket) (No such file or directory) |

It is not warning. It is "(Connection refused)" and you've got "(No such file or directory)" |

I was wrong! I double checked and you were right there is (WW) in the beginning of the line This means it is only warning. So, what could be wrong ? If this is not the root cause, where should I check and what ? regards Rafal |
Are there any lines starting with (EE) in the log?

Solved
Thanks for all help !
SOLVED ;-) I don't know why nVidia and Open SuSE community provides WRONG link to the latest drivers??? I spent few days to test everything possible with driver version 169.12 (from February 2008) Link from OpenSUSE.org goes to the driver: Linux IA32 Latest Version: 169.12 Latest Legacy GPU version (1.0-71xx series): 71.86.04 Latest Legacy GPU version (1.0-96xx series): 96.43.05 Archive BUT (!) if you go to "Archive" you can find this: Linux Display Driver - x86 Version: 171.06 Operating System: Linux x86 Release Date: March 07, 2008 I found this only because I thought I will try with older drivers. Even If I search for driver for my card (GeForce 8500 GT) it points to the driver 169.12 (from February). All my problems went away after I installed latest driver: 171.06 and executed: sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia Strange but I see correlation with another problem I had. I could shut down my OpenSUSE. It usually stopped at: Master Resource Control: runlevel 0 has been reached OR Skipped services in runevel 0: SUSEFirewall2.setup After I installed nVidia driver and it works, I can shut down my system without any problems. regards Rafal |
Here some additional comments from my side
(you have to read this: http://www.suseforums.net/index.php?...=0#entry240612 to understand why I put these comments): + in the meantime I reinstalled the system to 32 bit version (Open Suse 10.3 32 bit), so do not be confused that you see 32-bit driver for 64-bit system + Quote:
+ I am using ASUS M2N motherboard and it has nVidia chipset, so I think it can explain why I do not observe problems with shutdown after I installed drivers (although my main problem was video card, by the way I installed new drivers for all nVidia chipsets I have) I hope what I described in this post can be helpful. regards Rafal |
