Problem with hardware recognition on Asus M2NPV-VM motherboard
 
Salutation!

My story is going to be a bit long; I apologize in advance.

I just got myself a new computer and I've been trying for the last couple of days to install linux on it with limited success. There are pieces of hardware that are not being recognized (my knowledge about hardware is highly deficient). My computer has the following:

Asus M2NPV-VM motherboard
AM2 Athlon 64 3500+
512MB Kingston DDR2 667
160GB Sata II Western Digital 8Mb
Video Nvidia GeForce 6150 + nForce 430 Integrated
Ethernet card 1/100
Sound card 5.1

I first tried to install Fedora Core 6. All went well from the beginning to the end but once I started playing with it there were a couple of bugs. First when I played the sound test only one of the speakers worked while the other was making a very annoying noise. Second, I was limited to only two resolutions for the screen.

I decided to try another distro and I chose Ubuntu 6.10. I first tried to install ubuntu-6.10-desktop-amd64.iso but the thing didn't even boot (I'm still confused though, was it supposed to work or was I way off the track by choosing this one?). I then tried ubuntu-6.10-desktop-1386.iso which worked and installed fine. I now have no problem with the sound and I have a wide variety of resolutions to choose from for the screen display. However, I know there's something wrong and I'm sure it has something to do with the recognition of the video card. For example, when I scroll up or down on a web page, it's not going smoothly (I don't know what term to use to describe it).

The kernel version is: 2.6.17-10-generic

Linux is supposed to work fine on that type of hardware. I then tried to install Fedora Core 5 since it's one of the versions they used for their test but the installer didn't boot. It jammed after giving the following message:

Then nothing more. I've found some web pages talking about issues with APIC but I didn't understand much of what they say. I'll go check some more.

OK. So this problem is quite common with Asus-type motherboards and is about the kernel having a hard time with the AM2 socket and/or the Nvidia chipset. So I guess that the only thing I can do now is to be patient and wait for a kernel with the proper patch. It's times like these that make me regret not to be an expert on that kind of stuff.

Oh well.

After trials and errors, my computer is now working falwlessly! It was only a matter of finding the right distro.

I just want to add a piece of information that I didn't mention before. Mandriva is working fine on that mobo, but the versions I've tried are Mandriva Discovery 2007 and Mandriva Powerpack 2007. I haven't tried the free version and I don't plan to. However, I have received an e-main from someone who has encountered bugs with the free version.

the m2npv-vm board works great for me with ubuntu (edgy) and fedora core 6. you have to add "noapic"-kernel-option.

Yes, you're right Jo.

I remember reading about that in a couple of forums. I didn't have the occasion of trying it myself though, but it's good to know that it works. There's been also other cases where a BIOS update solved the problem too.
