problem with ESS ES1869 sound card in mandrake 9

hi everyone,
i am newbie in linux, to be honest dont know any command except "ls".
i have installed mandrake 9.0 to my pc. i couldnt installed all the extentions because i have only the 1st cd but will get the other 2 today.
the problem is my sound card is ess es1869 and it is not autodetected in mandrake.
i have heard about soundcfg or something like that. what is that command?
and please can anyone tell me how to make mandrake to see my sound card. i want to listen mp3 under linux. so i need help.
thanks in advance.
P.S. please be clear while telling the commands i have to type. i am too new to linux.

it must sndconfig. i don't have access to a mandrake system right now (in fact i'm at work using wayndoze :)).

try to run this command from a terminal window:

lspci

(u can log in as a normal user and then 'su -' to become root and then run the above command).

using that command, you can determine if the card is recognize by your system. if yes, you can go to your desktop and look for the hardware config tool (or any soundcard detection program). mandraker offers a friendlier approach compared to other disros so u won't have a hard time figuring it out.

take time to browse the submenus in your gui desktop.

cheers.
