Problem with ALSA and ens1371

I've just installed Gentoo 2.6.5 and I'm having some problems with my sound card (ens1371). I did not compile anything to do with ALSA or OSS in the kernel, just compiled (built-in) support for sound. I installed ALSA-Driver, ALSA-lib and ALSA-utils, as seen in other threads and everything seems to go ok. But when I try "alsaconf" I get:

sr/sbin/alsaconf: line 33: [: too many arguments
/usr/sbin/alsaconf: line 35: [: too many arguments
which: no dialog in (/usr/kde/3.2/bin:/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/opt/bin:/usr/i686-pc-linux-gnu/gcc-bin/3.3:/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/qt/3/bin:/usr/kde/3.2/sbin:/usr/kde/3.2/bin)
which: no whiptail in (/usr/kde/3.2/bin:/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/opt/bin:/usr/i686-pc-linux-gnu/gcc-bin/3.3:/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/qt/3/bin:/usr/kde/3.2/sbin:/usr/kde/3.2/bin)
Error, dialog or whiptail not found.

I move on and try alsamixer. For my surprise it work! i unmute all channels, and save the configuration. But when i run KDE, the sound server says it can't find /dev/dsp and i get no sound.....

Here is what i get from lsmod:

odule Size Used by
snd_ens1371 20068 0
snd_rawmidi 21088 1 snd_ens1371
snd_seq_device 7048 1 snd_rawmidi
snd_pcm 87076 1 snd_ens1371
snd_page_alloc 9092 1 snd_pcm
snd_timer 22532 1 snd_pcm
snd_ac97_codec 61892 1 snd_ens1371
snd 50084 6 snd_ens1371,snd_rawmidi,snd_seq_device,snd_pcm,snd_timer,snd_ac97_codec
ne2k_pci 7776 0
8390 8576 1 ne2k_pci

Anyone can help me with this?

Try re-compiling your kernel but make sure sound is compiled as modules not built-in. Also do you see /dev/dsp and can you play a sound file.

no de/dsp ? you seem to have forgotten to run the ./snddevices script in alsa-drivers !

as for the error message about dialog or whiptail not beeing installed, well... install dialog or whiptail. either will do.

then um-mute the chanels with alsamixer
