Problem installing Fedora Core 4 on HP Pavilion zd8000 with XP Media Center

I have tried to install Fedora Core 4 from an ISO file on DVD to an HPPavilion8000Laptop with XP Media Center as its operating system. I plan to install the Linux on an external hard drive and setup for dual boot with existing XP Media center. I purchased the laptop with the main drive 100% XP and have not repartitioned. After the DVD loads and the blue 'Fedora Core' banner appears, selection of ANY of the options and ENTER gives a blank screen with a nondescript grey background pattern. No text or graphic is visible so it is impossible to proceed with installation. Anyone had and/or solved this problem?
