The modem is based on the Conexant CX82320 chipset
How do I go about now?
According to http://dsl.linux.it/ChipsetConexantUsb ,

But how do I use it? Linux newbie here .. Willing to experiment

According to that webpage:

In February 2005 an improved driver was released, and is part of official kernels since 2.6.13.

... so the driver is in your kernel. The logs will tell us more about why the driver is not associating with your modem.
Read through...
http://accessrunner.sourceforge.net/
... accessrunner website, tells you what you need to know. Basically you need the driver and the right firmware before you can think about an internet connection.

... same chipset, different modem.
I always advise ethernet modems. They cost a bit more but they always work.
