What do you mean by "probe"? If you are looking to find out some basic information about a disk, you can simply
Code:
fdisk -l
Note that's a lowercase "L" at the end. -- J.W.

i would like to probe the harddisk during the boot time, means while installing linux os it is detecting keyboard and mouse and i would like to include functionality of probing harddisk also. this probing and all will be taken care of by installer, to get the functionality of probing harddisk code has to be kept there. please tell me how to detect harddisk in a way that name, capacity, serial no. thanks in advance.
