Probelm with sound

hello,
i`ve recently installed mandrake linux 10.1 community and i can`t hear anything using my intel on-board sound card while my web-cam in plugged to the usb. after i unplug it it works ok.
the web-cam (came from asus bundled with my graphic card) has an attached microphone on it so perhaps this couses the problem.
apparently the web-cam blocks the access to the sound card device in some way (driver or i don`t know what...), so how can i neutralize the usage of the web-cam to solve this probelm? or maybe this can be solved in some other way?
on the hardware list it shows the web-cam as an unkown device so i didn`t find a way to configure it.

system: mandrake 10.1 community, mother-board intel D865PERL, processor (if it matters) intel 2.8Ghz HT.

thanks

if you've multiple soundcard's in a system the devices will be /dev/dsp, /dev/dsp1, /dev/dspn,...
this is fine if you boot up with two soundcards. in your case the usb might get plugged in later, so i can't tell you where to find it, but it can become /dev/dsp and the soundcard will be moved to /dev/dsp1 (?). check for that by playing some short wave directly to the /dev/dsp(1) with "cat some.wav > /dev/dsp(1)".

check your web-cam-module (modinfo xx) if there is an option to not enable the microphone and change the usb loader that way.

sl mritch.
