Printing woes w/Mandrake 8.2

I can't get Mandrake 8.2 to produce an acceptable print on my Canon 4100.
I've tried all the different print servers (CUPS ect...), and all the various Canon drivers . None will give me a decient print. I've downloaded and installed all the recient updates, no help there. I've never had any problems printing with older versions. Could I have run into the problem of the more you overtake the plumbing the easier it is to plug the drain?

Cannon don't offer much support for linux.
Have you tried the gimp-print drivers?
