First thing to check is whether or not the USB controller is rev 02, because the printer probably is.

Run the command lspci. In the output, there should be a line in re the USR controller, and which rev it is. If it's rev 01, you will need a new controller.

Trying to run a USB rev 02 device with a USB rev 01 controller results in very slow performance of that device.
