Printers with Redhat 9

I am having a lot of problems with printing from red hat 9 to a windows computer with the printer. It worked for a while, ages ago, but then it stopped and after a fair bit of fiddling around it is now not working atall.

When i load up the Print Manager, it says "No Printers Installed. Would you like to run the printer configuration program?" I say yes, type in root password, and then it goes into the preferences page. The printer is there perfectly fine. The printers used to also appear in the print manager and after I configured it the first time that question never came up again, until a while ago.

After i have editied, deleted, reconfigured and generally played around with the printer settings and I press Test>Printer Test Page, it comes up with an error. I think this is also the reason that the printer doesnt come up in the print manager.

The message given is :
Quote:

lpr:unable to print file:server-error-service-unavaliable
What service is it that isnt running?

I am at a complete loss here, and it is so annoying having to reboot into windows just to send something to the printer.

(It is not just a network error, i tried moving the printer upstairs and connecting it to the printer port (/dev/lp0) it was detected and installed as perfectly, but with identical errors.)

Thanks for any help in advance,

TwoSheds

first, welcome to linuxquestions.org

lpr is a *nix network print sharing option. you should be using samba (smb) to share windows' printers. try and turn on samba. you can get to the services through the serviceconf command as root.

another suggestion: you could also try and get the printer to print on the linux box, then move it. this is a simpler problem to solve.

it is really confusing me

i have cups also, and when i set up the printer i chose "smb" printer.

it is not practical for me to share the printer, i need to access it.

it always used to work the way i have it now, but then something went wrong.

i am planning on reinstalling soon anyway becuase i am also having problems with wine (installed winex from source, didnt work, gave up, now i have the rpm and when i isntall the rpm it just has the same errors, whereas my friends more or less identical computer has no problems with the rpm, but he has never had winex before)
