Printer troubles again

By now, everyone probably knows i am an idiot, because this is my fourth post in 2 days about printing. But I downloaded cups, hpijs, and I still can't get to localhost:631. I use gnome 2.4, hp deskjet 842c, slackware, and as I said, I am stuck at the cups thing. Ive tried some different browsers and they didn't work. So, as I said, I am useless and need step by step instructions on how to get to localhost:631 from here if it is possible.

Perhaps you didn't start cupsd? Check with ps:

Code:
$ ps aux | grep cupsd
root 7467 0.4 0.3 4816 1888 ? S 23:21 0:00 cupsd
mark 7661 0.0 0.0 1512 440 pts/1 S 23:23 0:00 grep cupsd

Short answer:
It means that cupsd isn't running, you should run 'cupsd' and also add it to your startup scripts so that it runs every time you start your computer.

Long answer:
'ps aux' lists all the running tasks. There should be one called cupsd in the list. 'grep' is a program which can find lines which match a certain expression. If you just type 'ps aux' you get a lot of tasks, and you can use grep to filter the results by piping the ouput of ps into grep. If you don't want to use grep, you can just type:
Code:
ps aux
and look for the line containing cupsd yourself. If it's not there then you need to start it. Clear?

not really- I ran ps aux and cupsd is running in root but not in my user.
furthermore after I restart /etc/init.d/cups it cuts back off again! and I've restarted cups several times!
It's listed in my startup as one of the programs that runs when I turm my computer on, and I still can't connect to localhost 631!
I apologize for posting more than once, this is very frustrating!
and to recap... I'm running fedora core 1 and I'm trying to make my hp deskjet 3322 connected by USB to my 266mHz AMD machine with 30 gig hd and 164 megs of ram
