Question Practically brand new hard drive (6 months), Linux says "Disk has many bad sectors"


I get a desktop notification in Gnome telling me that my hard disk may be failing when I log in and that my disk has many bad sectors.

The disk is a 6 or 7 month old sata drive. The model is a Seagate ATA ST3300620AS.

I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but I copied a 10 or 11 year old hard disk (containing Windows 7) onto this new disk.

It is odd (and annoying) that a new drive will be spawning these errors. Could it be a glitch due to the copying of the old hard disk to the new disk?

The hard disk in question does not contain my Linux operating system. It contains Windows 7. I boot into Windows 7 on this "failing disk" just fine and use it for certain Windows only tasks like design work with Adobe Creative Suite CS4 Master Collection. I don't seem to have any problems with it when I'm inside Windows 7.

I don't recall chkdsk in Windows 7 showing any errors. I only see this error notification when I boot into Linux.

I'm running Arch Linux:
2.6.36-ARCH

EDIT:
One line from smartctl shows this:
Code:
Error 93 occurred at disk power-on lifetime: 8943 hours (372 days + 15 hours)
so perhaps the disk is more than a year old, but it's still relatively new.

I have same problem. I checked my hard disk in Windows 7, but it inform that there is no bad sector. Have you had solution yet?

A couple of years ago I purchased a 1TB Seagate and went to install Windows onto it (at the time I required Windows for work) I went through and started the install and Windows apparently formatted it but it could not do the install so I hooked it up as a D:\ drive and went through it all again format check disk etc. Windows showed nothing wrong at all but it still wouldn't install. I then booted the PC with an Ubuntu LiveCd and got the popup message saying the HDD was failing. Took it to the place of purchase the next day where they tested it and confirmed the HDD had infact given up the ghost. I had the drive for less than a week. Sometimes these things are just faulty.

Hi,

I would (I do) test disk with Seagate SeaTools
which I downloaded a bootable CD from here and also you can get the tools from Seagate

It helps a lot to determine the issue with hard drive.

This is why it is bad to make lots of posts in your thread, it takes you off the zero reply list and no-one ever sees your thread.

Anyway, I would check all the cables, I would run the Seagate tests or a smartctl long test. A better CD to burn would be:

If it is failing, return it under warranty.
