Power Button

Something I really miss from Windows is that when I pressed my computer's power button, the computer would shut down as if I had selected it from the Start menu. In every Linux distribution I've used, it powers off straight away, without running the shutdown run level.

Is it possible to enable this? I know that this wasn't a limitation with my computer as Windows 98SE did this fine. Using 'shutdown -h now' shuts down fine.

I'm running Slackware 11.0 with APM enabled.

Thanks to any replies.

Are you using Gnome? I know that in Gnome you configure it to ask you what to do when you press the power button. I'm not on my PC right now, but it should be somewhere under Power Management options I assume.

No, I'm using fluxbox as the window manager.

Mepis has this so called "feature".

It isn't a very useful thing though when you have just the monitor off, and your little niece hits that button to turn the computer "on"... bzzz.. off goes the computer and all the unsaved programs you had running.

The whole point of the menu asking which you want is to help prevent that from happening.

I've done a little research and found the ACPI daemon handles this. Unfortunately, when enabling that, it gives me the messages; "ACPI disabled because your BIOS is from 00 and is too old." I found out that you can force it to enable it, but I'm sure it would know better then me.

So does anybody know if it's possible to shutdown using the APMD daemon?

Try running SimplyMepis from LiveCD and see if it can get it
