Please Help Me, Im A Newbie And If I Dont Get Help Soon I Might Stop Using Linux
Hey,
I need major help, ive been using linux red hat 9 and i have tons of issues. first of all, im new to shell programing but im learning that, but just a heads up, try to keep it a little low tech in your vocab when you answer, otherwise its totally possible i wont understand you at all. sorry, but im in the process of learning up on it. anyways, above all problems are my TWO compatibility issues. #1-is my whole wireless pci issue. I love havin dsl, but i have to set up wireless, cause theres not too many phone or cable outlets in my house. I have a Netgear MA311 for my desktop and a netgear MA401 for my laptop. I cant get them to work on my red hat 9 linux and i need some help with that. My next problem is my mp3 player. I got a creative nomad zen 60gb which i love having, but once again it doesnt work with redhat 9 and i need some help setting that up. Ive heard that its possible, i just need to know how. If you can help me out with either of these issues, it would be greatly apprieciated. Help a linux brother out man. thanks a lot, and if you can try to make it so your not too high tech, cause im just a california hippy and as much as id like to know a lot about shell, right now i dont know much at all. thanks a bunch...peace out...THE LINUX HIPPY
I think I can help you out with the Netgear MA401.
Check out my web page under the Internet section. The directions are for my Toshy running RedHat 8.0. 9.0 was shipped with the same version of the orinoco driver that 8.0 was shipped with so the directions still apply.

i wonder why people always threaten to give up on linux right away? "help me or i quit!" echoes their pleading voices.
did they do a google search? the world may never know! "wireless pci; linux" yield 286,000 results! "creative nomad; linux" yields 22,500 results!
"please help me"! yields 7,460,000 results!
"i don't know anything!" yeilds 7,530,000 results!
"i give up! yields 10,500,000 results!
"i love windows! yields 3,610,000 results!
"because linux sucks" yields 170,000 results!
I am trying to get a netgear MA401 working on my(well works) Dell lattitude CSx..
I have a wlan0 showing, but the status light on my card just flashes...
Strangely I get the 2 beeps to indicate the card and driver are correct - but I cannot get it to connect..
It appears to load the prismII and orinoco modules, which I believe is correct , but I cannot get the thing to link to my WAP (which is configured and working perfectly well on the other laptop running win98)..
Any pointers or advice would be great..
I looked at the website rmartine mentioned, but I don't appear to have the same version as you.
My site is down right now. I've been lazy and haven't brought it back up. If you're using Redhat 9.0 then you've got the same one as 8.0. In /etc/pcmcia/config or something like that, bind your card to the orinoco driver.
the card now seems to be seen correctly - still as wlan0, it recognises the WAP, but does not get an IP.
If I try to configure it though the gui and add a new wireless device it says there is nothing to do...
If I try to add it as an adapter it cannor find it.
It does show on the hardware browser (although I cannot remember exactly what it shows as, I think it shows as a PRISMII card).
I guess I am missing a blindingly obvious step here, and any help (including along the lines of - didn't you do xxxx you muppett :-) ) would be gratefully received.
