Pioneer 115D unable to read burned dual layer DVD

I've Pioneer 115D DVD writer capable of reading and writing dual layer
dvd. So burned one DL dvd. k3b says it burned successfully. I wanted to
see if i can read the dl dvd. To my surprise Pioneer writer can't read
from it. i burned couple of dvd. Still the same problem. I'm using
Memorex DVD+R DL media. How can i make it recognize all DL media? I'm
using 2.6.18-custom kernel and Debian Etch.

i try to mount with dl media:

#$ mount -t iso9660 /dev/hda /media/cdrom0

Code:

mount: block device /dev/hda is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hda,
      missing codepage or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
      dmesg | tail  or so

#$ dmesg | tail

Code:

hda: tray open
ATAPI device hda:
Error: Not ready -- (Sense key=0x02)
  Incompatible medium installed -- (asc=0x30, ascq=0x00)
The failed "Read 10" packet command was:
  "28 00 00 00 00 10 00 00 01 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 "
end_request: I/O error, dev hda, sector 64
isofs_fill_super: bread failed, dev=hda, iso_blknum=16, block=16

Does this burner come with dual-layer capability automatically enabled? Some of the earlier Pioneer DVD burners required a firmware update before they would work with dual layer reading/burning.

Check your manual and the Pioneer website.

I'm surprised the burner managed to finish burning that media.
Memorex media is reknowned to be the worst crap on the planet.

Want to burn Dual Layer, buy verbatim/mitsubishi (MCC) .. it's the only decent stuff out there (at the moment) in dual layer DVD media.

Some people have reported decent results with Ricoh media, but I've never found a decent Ricoh Dual Layer disc yet.

This is not a software problem .. this is not a hardware problem ...
This is a Media (Disc) problem.

Rubbish in, rubbish out. Simple.

Want more info on Burning ..

Hi,

it would be interesting to know the program and which version is used by your k3b (can see it in k3b configuration panel). Is it wodim, plain cdrecord, growisof something else ?

There were a few bugs around regarding dvd-dl burning, they are now fixed in the newer versions.

It is also possible that your dvd drive could benefit from a firmware upgrade, look at the manufacturer website, pioneer is keen on releasing new firmwares.
Unfortunately I'm afraid you'll need windows to upgrade the firmware :-(

While it is highly unlikely that all the dvd's in a spindle are defective, irrespective of the manufacturer, it is possible that a few are... maybe try testing one in another computer.

Can you try burning this media in a different burner?

I'd be surprised if they manage to burn it without getting a sense key error part way through .. usually when switching to the second layer.
