Question Permission on an External Formatted under Windows

I simply want to be able to write to my external and delete stuff without having to switch to windows, I've tried changing the user permissions and the owner group but it keeps telling me that the hard drive is only readable. --- Which I obviously know. Is it possible to gain access to this harddrive? When I use chown it tells me to change the absolute user group of "disk", how do I do this? Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

if the drive formatted NTFS?
if so linux cannot write to it natively you will need to DL an NTFS driver

I do not use any myself so I cannot recommend one that I know to work
this is a free one that I have heard of http://www.jankratochvil.net/project/captive/

again I do NOT use this myself and cannot guarantee it will work for you, but it's free

The driver installtion was successful, but it still won't let me change the permissions, I've been typing,

chmod a=rwx disk

While logged in as the su, while I'm in the media directory. Is that right? I get the same thing If I use the number system. While logged in as the su.
