Pentium 4 or Pentium Duo

I have finally decided to upgrade my system but I'm not sure which cpu to get! I'm going to be doing lots of processor intensive work, mostly programming and database related stuff.

Anyony any recommendations?

IMHO the Core Duo is the way to go. The Pentium 4 was pretty much a mistake from the start, while the new Core Duo looks very nice. It comes from the same heritage as the Pentium M which has performed very well for me. AMD64 or Core Duo is my suggestion, with the AMD64 giving you a lot more performance for your money. If money is not a problem then Core Duo all the way.

Thanks for the tip, so if you had the choice between a 3.0Ghz P4 and a 2.66Ghz Duo would you still go with the Duo?

I would still go with AMD64. Pentium 3 was incredibly good, and Pentium M still is, everything after that is Intel brand name and brand loyalty of customers. AMD has the real value.

The Core Duo without a doubt. But, like Emerson said, the real bang for the buck is with AMD64.
