Pendrives, USB Sticks, Flash Drives ... They are not created equal
Hello all,
I've read about booting from Pendrives and installing Linux and other operating systems. I think the easier thing is "installing from" a pendrive. The much more difficult thing (I think?) would be "installing to" a pendrive and having a fully configured, and functional (read / write) OS on a pendrive. Probably a difficult job and one for advanced (experienced) Linux users? Anyway, I seen on a video that not all Flash / Pendrives will boot Linux. Perhaps some won't boot any OS .. I don't know? So, what are the better working pendrives for Linux? The ones with the best track record that boot Linux - time, after time, after time - Without issue? I'm going to buy some pendrives to use for booting Linux and I don't want to waste my funds on something that isn't going to work, or work well. Thank You! |
some pendrives won't boot on certain motherboards. That is correct. I think because they start to slow.
I have good experiance with "PNY USB FLASH DRIVE HOOK ATTACHE 16GB METALLIC SILVER" |
I'd guess that 92% of the people who use linux and have a supported distro and board will find no issues at all.
How I got to that number is pure guessing by the way. I have used pendrives for a very long time. They are very easy to use now. At one time just trying to get them to boot was a chore. I stick with the big name brand usb's bought from reliable sources. |
I've put Linux Mint Katya on a 16 GB Sandisk Cruzer. It booted up just fine. Just be aware that booting up off of a usb stick is slower than booting up off of a hard drive.
