Pctel789 install problem not found elsewhere.

I installed Mepis 2004.b5. Using Linux 2.4.26. I have a Pctel789 modem. It used to install fine with Mepis 2003 using kernel 2.4.22. Now I am having problems that, so far, everything I have tried doesn't seem to work.

When I install it, this is what I get:

root@0[pctel-0.9.7-9]# ./setup
checking for running kernel version...2.4.26
checking for ptserial...ptserial-2.4.7.c
checking for gcc...3.3.3
searching for kernel includes...found at /usr/src/linux/include
checking for modversions.h.../usr/src/linux/include/linux/modversions.h
checking for kernel_version...UTS_RELEASE is 2.4.26
detecting your modem...lspci: Cannot open /sys/bus/pci/devices
** error
autodetection failed, your modem is not in the database of
known modems. Try to guess the hal and report success, if
the modem worked. Please read the FAQ about autodetection
failed.

please enter your hal type
choose one of: pct789, cm8738, i8xx, sis, via686a
hal type:

I type in "pct789" and it then says that it is installed.

Then when I do "insmod -f pctel" this is what I get:

root@0[pctel-0.9.7-9]# insmod -f pctel
Using /lib/modules/2.4.26/pctel.o
/lib/modules/2.4.26/pctel.o: /lib/modules/2.4.26/pctel.o: unresolved symbol kfree_Rsmp_037a0cba
/lib/modules/2.4.26/pctel.o: /lib/modules/2.4.26/pctel.o: unresolved symbol kmalloc_Rsmp_93d4cfe6
/lib/modules/2.4.26/pctel.o: /lib/modules/2.4.26/pctel.o: unresolved symbol __udelay_Rsmp_9e7d6bd0

/lib/modules/2.4.26/pctel.o:
Hint: You are trying to load a module without a GPL compatible license
and it has unresolved symbols. The module may be trying to access
GPLONLY symbols but the problem is more likely to be a coding or
user error. Contact the module supplier for assistance, only they
can help you.

root@0[pctel-0.9.7-9]#

I have tried it logged in as user and typing "su" with the same results.

Hopefully someone has the answer. I'm running out of hair to pull out.

Thanks for taking time to read this.

Mike
