pctel modem problem

Hi! I'm having trouble getting my modem to work in linux. So here are the details to my hardware:

Dell Inspiron 600m
1.3ghz
384MB RAM

Modem: PCTEL 2304WT V.92 MDC Modem
Linux: Mandrake 9.1 (with 2.4.21 kernel)

Steps taken:
-download pctel 0.9.7-9
-ran ./configure with hal type i8xx
(no errors)
-ran make
(no errors)
-ran make install
(no errors)

-ran insmod pctel
(error: pctel compiled with gcc 2, kernel with gcc 3. Known not to work) Same error with 'insmod ptserial'.

-ran insmod -f pctel and insmod -f ptserial
got warnings: pctel.o will taint the kernel
ptserial.o will taint the kernel

although it was only during 'insmod -f pctel' that i got a "module loaded" message. I didn't get that during 'insmod -f ptserial'. Only a couple of warnings(the 'taint' one).

here's the output of 'tail /var/logs/messages':
May 15 02:52:47 localhost devfsd: Running devfsd actions: succeeded
May 15 02:52:52 localhost netconf: Checking kernel configuration
May 15 02:52:52 localhost linuxconf: Running Linuxconf hooks: succeeded
May 15 02:52:53 localhost kernel: Splash status on console 0 changed to off
May 15 02:52:53 localhost echo: 0
May 15 02:52:53 localhost rc: Disabling Boot logo succeeded
May 15 02:53:04 localhost kde3(pam_unix)[1215]: session opened for user paul by (uid=0)
May 15 02:53:08 localhost xinetd[1636]: warning: can't get client address: Transport endpoint is not connected
May 15 02:53:55 localhost su(pam_unix)[1705]: session opened for user root by paul(uid=501)
May 15 02:56:45 localhost kernel: PCTel: No device detected. Abort module loading.

After doing all these, I checked HardDrake. I still can't find my modem. Although it had a device named 'unknown device' which it thinks is a COMMUNICATIONS_MODEM. After installing the driver, shouldn't i be able to view it in harddrake?

I tried setting up an internet connection using the wizard in control panel->networking->internet connection. I got a lot of devices listed like
ttyS0/com1
ttyS1/com2
ttyS2/com3
...
/dev/modem

So, I used /dev/modem(i'm really just guessing here). After the wizard, I tried connecting to the internet. But I can't even hear it dial. Which should I use?

What do you think am I missing?

I'm using Suse 9.2 and I have a bit of the same problem.

Since the PCTEL 2304WT modem is a Winmodem. Based on what I read so far, I don't think you can use the /dev/ttySn since this is using the actual comm ports. My Suse auto detects the modem and it set it as /dev/ttySL0.

You might try setting it to that and then view log again, it might work or at least give you a better ideal what's working or what's not.
