I finally was able to use my pctel hsp 56 micromodem on Mandrake 8.2. Here is the steps:
1. Download the driver source from
here .
2.Uncompress the source to any directory. I used my home directory.
3. In this step you will have to know the communication chip that you modem is using. (There is a script somewhere for this,it did not work for me so I don't have it now.) You will have to look at you motherboard manual for this. Mine is a 8738 chip.
login as root:
cd to the directory of your driver source
./configure --with-hal=cm8738(replace this with you com chip)
make
make install
if no errors are displayed then your modem driver is compiled.
insmod -f pctel
insmod -f ptserial
mkmod /dev/ttyS15 c 62 79 ##this creates a port for your modem
chmod +a+rw /dev/ttyS15
ln -sf /dev/ttyS15 /dev/modem##this symlicks the modem port
4.start kppp, set port to /dev/modem and "talk" to modem
5.configure you account and browse
enjoy!
