PCMCIA controller and PCMCIA-card ST Lab C140 10/100 not detected on Mepis 3.4-3

I'm new to Linux and I've recently installed Mepis 3.4-3 on my Packard Bell IGO 2451 laptop. But my ST Lab C140 PCMCIA network card is not detected. Mepis' Info Center tells that 'no PCMCIA controller detected'. So I guess the problem is not the network card. What can be done? I've also encountered the same problem using a Slax live-CD.
