Don't expect it to be an easy ride though!
Quite often, with Winmodems, the chipset stated on the list from the above link will not be the same one as you have on your physical modem...because manufacturers choose whichever one happens to be cheapest at the time of manufacture. Honestly, the very best advice I can give you to make things much easier is...sell your Winmodem to someone (a mate or relative) that is really unlikely to be using Linux or XP and then get yourself a nice serial port modem - these cannot fail to be hardware modems and are infinitely easier to use!

I mention XP only because, being an NT based OS, it too sometimes has serious problems with software modems...hence the barrage of USB winmodems that have gone back to shops because they can't be used under XP...and no-one is making drivers for them, so some Windows users are coming up against the same problems as us Linux users are used to! That'll teach them to go with Microsoft products.
