Pcchips M861g Amd 64 3400+ [SOLVED]

I'm seeing posts from people who have gotten linux installed on this hardware but I've tried several different versions (2006, 2007 and 2007.1 / i586 and x64 version) of Mandriva and I keep getting a segmentation error or just locking up. I've had excellent experiences with Mandriva. I've had 2006 on my workstation (Athlon 2800) for at least a year now and it's been rock solid.

I've been having some hardware issues and had them replaced. This is the third Motherboard and it came with XP on the harddrive so I know the Motherboard is good but I need a linux environment for developing.

I've tried this with the noapic, nolapic, acpi=off boot options. I've tried graphic and non-graphic install. I've turned off the on-board peripherals.

Here's the link to what I got
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...074656552&rd=1

I've never had this much problem with an install BUT I've never tried a x64 before. Is this an x64?? I was able to get a truly minimal install of Mandriva 2007 i586 to finish installing and boot but when I tried to install any more packages the install crashed before finishing.

Perhaps I need to try a different Distro? I'd like to stick with mandriva but I'm open to suggestions by anyone with this hardware who has gotten it to work with another distro.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That uses the VIA K8M800/8237 chipset. Hope the mods don't mind the plug, but VIAarena has a linux forum where you're much more likely to solve the problem. You should come back and post the solution, if you find one.

FWIW though PCChips is made by ECS which is probably one of the CHEAPEST mobo makers on the planet. Here's an overclocked VIA 800Mhz CPU being advertised as 2000+, for example. And the CPU is SOLDERED on the mobo so it's not the reseller doing it. They come from the factory that way!

Complete garbage IMHO.

Thanx for the replies. It appears I was suffering from a bad memory stick. I pulled it and Mandriva 2007.1 installed perfectly.

Stick might work fine in another mobo BTW. Some are more finicky than others.
