I have a Gateway MT3421 with the MCP51 high def audio card in it. For some reason (with updated alsa drivers) the sound (other than system sounds) seem to come through distorted and fuzzy. Does anyone have any idea what would be causing this? If it helps, the laptop was manufactured in July of 2007...

...too new??

In the volume manager, check the PCM value, if it's at the maximum level, try taking it down to 75 -80% and see if that helps.
