pata port on sata raid via vt-6421 help

i just got the above piece of hardware, and thought i could easily plug a pata drive on the port and not even use the sata ports. i have lots of controller cards and found this one on special. i have no sata drives, and am trying to get a 180 gig WD pata drive working on the port. i have tried compiling the fake raid drive once, and many times with the libata stuff included, and the software patches from jeff garzik's kernel patch site. i have once seen the option to include pata support on sata controllers, but i don't think i got any results. i am generally messing with kernel 2.6.26 with the kolivas ck3 patchset.
i am generally unclear as to what device sata devices should show up as, and especially what the pata device would show up as. i've been running fdisk -l and cdrecord -scanbus, looking for stuff, but to no avail.
i painfully booted win98 and installed the driver, and the device showed up. that was just to test if the card worked.
if i'm goign to need to wait several months for this type of hardware to work, then thats ok, but if it should work now, and i'm messing up, then please give me some advice.
