Partitioning existing hard drive

Searched for this, but no luck...

I have Fedora Core 1 on a 10 Gb drive. What I was thinking about doing was partitioning this into 2 5 Gb drives to try out another distro - maybe Mandrake.

However, since Fedora is already on it (I'm sure total size is less than 5 Gb though), is it possible to simply "split off" 5 Gb into another partition?

I boot using Grub, so ideally I'd like Grub to let me choose between Fedora and Mandrake (if that's what I install).

You can do this. Use 'parted' to make the resize. But before doing this, make a backup. It's partitioning and something may always go wrong. Mandrake, in it's graphical installer, has a partitiong program that allows you to make the resize, the same way as using parted, but the installer is graphical (what means it'll be probably easier to use).

Thanks Mara. This "parted" you refer to - is that the graphical installer for Mandrake? So I should just start with the ISO CDs and it will automatically partition 5 Gb of unused hard drive space? That sounds easy enough!

Not exactly. They're differnet program. Mandrake installer has something very simialr to parted build into (I don't know, maybe it's parted frontend).
It's not so automatic. You need to choose to partition manually (resize must be done manually). You enter the partitioning part, click on the partition, then 'resize' and you specify the size it should have.
