I haven't forgotten about this thread, but ran into a problem and since worked through it.

The DOS version of EDID didn't work and just scrolled lots and lots of garbage on the screen, so I tried the Linux version. Only problem with that is that when I installed Mandrake 9.1 many moons ago, for some reason I didn't include a compiler. Since the parents (and I) wanted a different distro (me frankly because nothing freakin worked in Mandrake - they changed the name of a bunch of standard commands for some reason and my parents because they had to put up with me swearing at their machine every time something didn't work as on other distros ), I backed up everything and installed Slackware 11.0, then restored all their stuff. Mysteriously, the standard xorg.conf settings as shipped with Slack work fine and do not produce this error message on the screen, so re-installing solved both problems.

On an unrelated side-note, does anybody else like Slack 10.2 better than 11.0?
