ouse wheel and slack 9.1

Sorry, lost the post about fixing the mousewheel in slackware. I read about editing the xorg.conf file, and inserting something about "buttons 5" and "XAxis" but I don't have that file in my /etc.

There are two places in my /etc/X11/XF86Free.conf that refer to the mouse, but am very new to editing. I tried to do it with pico 'cause that's what someone recommended, but I think I saved the file once or twice and then realized that the changes had not been saved. I used gedit once before on another edit and feel more comfortable with it.

Is someone willing to help me thru this?
Thanks

Take a look at this thread. Also use whichever editor you feel most comfortable with, but make sure that with time, you familiarise yoursefl with vi, emacs and pico, because those are the most common on Linux and other *nix.

the file xorg.conf is located in /etc/X11 or in the older systems in /etc/XFree86 (or something like it starting with a capital X anyway)

MAKE A BACKUP OF THE xorg.conf or XFree86.conf file before you edit it!!!

The line you are looking for is

Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"

Which you should add in the "Input device" section (the mouse section). You should identify it by Option "Protocol" "PS/2"

MAKE A BACKUP OF THE xorg.conf or XFree86.conf file before you edit it!!!

Save your changes and restart the X server (CTRL+ALT+Backspace). And you should be off. If that doesn't work, change the Protocol from PS/2 to IMPS/2 and you should be off.

Good luck!
