fsck.reiserfs /dev/root failed (status 0x8). Run manually fsck failed. Mounting root device read only.

After receiving this error the OS doesn't startup.

What does it mean and how can I get rid of this error?

sounds like you have some problems there. if your drive has SMART then have it check at system boot to see if you have disk errors. run some disk utils on it to scan the disk for any sector issues. you most likely need to rebuild the superblock in this case, if your drive has physical problems its time to get a new one.

Why is it listing /dev/root. What does your /etc/fstab say?
What does your bootloader's config look like?
