Options for installing Linux without Boot from CD option in BIOS
I would like to install Linux on a couple of older systems. The BIOS on the systems does not allow me to boot the installation CDROM. Do you know of a current distribution that includes an installation floppy disk that would allow me to configure basic networking on the target system and then point it to a NFS server for installation? I used to do this with Red Hat 5.2 back in 1999. Also tips on setting up the NFS volume on the other machine wud be helpful.
Try Slackware, which you can boot from floppies. You'll need the one boot disk (eg, bare.i) and the two root disks (install.1 and install.2) From there you can perform the installation from the CD, even if you can't boot from the CD. The Slackware book also describes the network installation method. Good luck with it -- J.W.
