Talking Optimizing performance with hdparm

I needed to use hdparm to clean up my DVD playback (by activating DMA) and in doing a little research to fix that problem I read that hdparm can greatly enhance IDE hardware performance. Does anybody know how to do this? Or can anybody explain how it works and why DMA improved my DVD playback?
