openSUSE 10.3 does not install on-board Cmedia CM6501 audio of Asus M2N-E SLI mobo
I am hoping someone has heard of a patch or workaround for getting the on-board sound recognized by the openSUSE 10.3 installer; needed for Cmedia 6501 on an Asus M2N-E SLI (reiterating the post title). I basically love just about everything else about SUSE 10.3 on my Athlon 64 X2 4600+, but there is no sound...
Thanx.
Nice to see NTFS with SUSE now, eh?
New Info: 10-30-2007!
My apologies to openSuse 10.3! During install, even though one cannot find the Cmedia 6501 listed, if one is attentive there is a find-able “ALL” selection on a left screen half of the “Manual Sound Card Selection” screen.
Selecting “ALL” reveals a generic “USB Audio, Generic” driver on the right screen half. This driver enables sound with the USB C-media 6501 on an ASUS M2N-E SLI. I can't vouch for any of the special features of the C-Media being enabled, though. My bad.
Thanks, I'm always ending up ashamed of not using my scroll keys and clicking around enough. My bad.
I'll tell you what's not fair, though, is the kinternet password box! That thing pastes a spare something (blank?) on the end of a password transferred from kwalletmanager, so I have to hit the delete key after the paste! I just spent an extra half-hour getting back my toast.net DSL connection, only because I couldn't remember that!!
Yes, the problem disappeared. But after some time(update) the sound card emits only hard noise instead of music or some kind of reasonable sound. Using the same module(Generic USB Audio). Did someone have that kind of problem?
This might just be a stupid suggestion, but I'll risk it. Is your M2N-E SLI flashed to BIOS version 1102 at least? No guarantees, here. Suse had trouble seeing the on-board ethernet and the Dvd burner in my rig, until I flashed to that version BIOS.

yes I'm using the 1102 bios and i had some problems with on-board ethernet also. Seem a recent update to "SUSE10.3" has fixed that though.
Funny thing is I'm not sure exactly what fixed it??
Will keep you informed as i learn more.
Have same problem with C-Media CM6501 on Asus M2N-E SLI
Yesterday, I switched my MSI K9NGM mobo for the ASUS M2N-E SLI. The reason for this switch was that the MSI board has insufficient BIOS support.
I have a dual boot of openSuse 10.3 and Ubuntu Studio. And with Ubuntu there is a persistent bios timer error with the MSI board.
Since most newer boards only have one IDE connector and I needed two because of the harddisks I have, the Asus M2N-e SLI seemed a good option.
Changing the mobo was quite easy, only the xserver configuration had to be redone at the console.
Only the onboard sound is not working under openSuse 10.3, the mixer for PnP sound is present but there's even no noise to be heard. The CM6501 is not supported by Alsa.
The hardware is detected correctly The lsusb command is listing the usb device and with lsmod I can see that snd-usb-audio is loaded. (See listings below)
Now the strange thing is, that with Ubuntu Studio I get sound when testing with the PnP sound mixer enabled. The PnP mixer though is the same as with openSuse, both very limited and surely not showing all controls the C-Media should offer.
I did have the time yet to find out why there's this difference when using the same hardware.
From the fact that Asus recently released a linux embedded board, I hoped to find linux support for older boards as well, but in reality this looks dissappointing when searching Asus website on "linux"
