OpenGL stopped working

Hi forum,

my Linux Mint 17 box with Intel Graphics HD 4000 refuses to start programs that use OpenGL.
They once worked. But today I wanted to start Stellarium, which just popped up an error Message reading "This system does not support OpenGL".
FreeOrion doesn't work either. Nor does FlatOut2 through wine or FreeCad.

All of them have been running in the past. But I cannot tell when they ceased working because I haven't used any of them for a while.

Code:
$ glxdemo
Error: couldn't get an RGB, Double-buffered visual
$ glxgears

ok, before i start shooting inthe dark, YOU should of course websearch your problem (something like "linux intel Xeon E3-1200 gl)...

maybe there's some version mismatch between driver and opengl?

have you updated your system properly, the way linux mint suggests? maybe you have to update some yellow packages, too?
i'm not too savvy with mint's update process, but you know what i mean i guess.

how old is this machine?
which kernel version?
it seems to me linux mint 18 would be a better choice?

Probably. I would first look at:

Code:
ldd /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so

Oh, I just noticed this:
Code:
Current Operating System: Linux 3.13.0-24-generic #47-Ubuntu SMP Fri May 2 23:30:00 UTC 2014 x86_64
3.13.0-24 is the original kernel that came with Ubuntu 14.04. That may mean you haven't installed important/security updates in years...

or a completely different distro, because i never liked how mint handle updates/-grades.
newbies tend to ignore them a lot, methinks, and linux mint somehow encourages that.

I update using the update tool in the task bar. It sorts updates into categories with different colours. I didn't update the red and red-ish because their text says they could potentially break things.

My search returned mostly stuff to do with "glrx". It seems that is some ATI driver, not installed in my system and not relevant for it because it only has Intel integrated graphics.

Code:
$ ldd /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so
	linux-vdso.so.1 =>  (0x00007fff63dfe000)
	libGL.so.1 => /usr/lib/nvidia-367/libGL.so.1 (0x00007f31ced1e000)

	libXext.so.6 => /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libXext.so.6 (0x00007f31cdad4000)

	libXdmcp.so.6 => /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libXdmcp.so.6 (0x00007f31cd4aa000)
How could I detect a version mismatch between driver and opengl?

Code:
libGL.so.1 => /usr/lib/nvidia-367/libGL.so.1
libGLX.so.0 => /usr/lib/nvidia-367/libGLX.so.0
libGLdispatch.so.0 => /usr/lib/nvidia-367/libGLdispatch.so.0
^There's your answer. For some reason, you installed the nvidia binary driver. Check to see if you have nvidia-related packages installed:
Code:
dpkg -l nvidia*
If not, chances are that you downloaded the driver from Nvidia's site and installed directly from that. You would need to download the 367.xx driver and run it again with --uninstall for the cleanest removal, like:
Code:
sudo ./Nvidia_someversionnumber.sh --uninstall

If you didn't install from packages, you're probably going to have to do this to get the correct libraries restored after you've uninstalled the nvidia stuff:
Code:
sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgl1-mesa-dri libgl1-mesa-glx xserver-xorg-core

Must be remnants from ancient times before the 8600GT blew up.
Even though things worked after that (until now), I'm going to clean up as you suggested.

Code:
dpkg -l nvidia*
And Synaptic showed some nvidia-related packages. I purged those that seemed to be driver packages, rebooted and Yeehaw!
Stellarium and Flatout2 and glxinfo and glxgears work again.

Thank you very much.

As for the antiquated kernel, it seems that this isn't even a longterm supported one. I guess you would advise to update?

Yes, I would advise installing security updates. I'm not sure why Mint uses the language it does to scare users. Please mark this thread solved.
