One cpu detected

I have a GA-7DPXDW-P motherboard with dual MP2800's. Just about every time I boot I find only one CPU is recognized. I usually can shutdown, unplug / replug power and then boot back up and it will see both. I'm using Mandriva 2006 now, it also did it with mandrake 10.
I think Linux is passed info from the Bios on what is detected? is that right? Could it be a power issue? On my 6th power supply!
Thanx Dad

Are you using an SMP kernel? You can find this info out, running the command "uname -a".

Yes it is SMP. When I replaced my last power supply it worked normal "2 cpu's" for several weeks. Now it started to only recognized one cpu but not every time. But if I reboot and turn the power off, it will usually come up seeing two.
I'm not sure how Linux determines how many CPU's there are? Is it a bios thing or something else?

Yes, Linux gets this info from your BIOS settings. Have you tried running different distros to see if the problem persists? This seems more like a hardware problem than a software problem.

I spent some time on it a while back. I pulled the cpu's and reseated them. That didn't work. I pulled them and cleaned the pins with a brush and alcohol, that didn't work. I swapped them around in the sockets and that didn't work either. It leads me to believe that there is something funky going on with the bios reporting. Its intermittant, tonight it came up seeing both cpu's first time. I was hoping that someone else has the same board and maybe worked out a fix. Mandriva is the only OS I have used. Maybe its a power sag at boot?

I really don't know but it seems like some sort of hardware issue. I've moved this thread to Linux Hardware and maybe someone may help.

Ok, I'm back after other issues, When I booted up tonight the bios screen displayed, detected MP-2800+ 2 cpu's. But when I launched Boinc it shows only one cpu detected. If I do cat /proc/cpuinfo it will show only one. So Something is going on between the bios and Mandriva 2006. It also did it on Mandrake 10.0 which is probably the same thing anyway. Later dudes!
