onboard Intel LAN Card is not being recognized by RedHat 9.0

I have a 40 GB HDD that I recently installed Red Hat 9.0 on. During the install Red Hat found my devices like the monitor, Floppy, CDROM, but it cannot find the Onboard INTEL LAN Card.

What do I need to do to get the LAN Card Working with Linux Red Hat 9.0?

Is it just a driver issue? If so where do I go get the driver? Intel?

Here is some info I was told to retrieve before I ask a question:

What is your motherboard make and model? I think you may be looking for the e1000.0 module but, I'd like to do a little research before pointing you in that direction.
good luck.

You can find your driver here.

http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scri...*&submit=Go%21

Before installation be sure and read the readme.txt.

ftp://aiedownload.intel.com/df-suppo...ENG/README.txt

good luck.

Thanks for the help Peacedog but I am running into some problems with the readme text.

5. Install the module:

insmod e1000 <parameter>=<value>

I do not know what the parameter or value should be, so what I did was just type insmod e1000

6. Assign an IP address to the interface by entering the following, where
x is the interface number:

ifconfig ethx <IP_address>

I get an error stating: SIOCSIFADDR: No such device ethx: unknown interface: no such device

I restarted the PC and it recognized new hardware. I then had to enter the Ip address, netmask, default gateway, and primary nameserver.

When I opened a terminal and I typed ifconfig it showed me my network interface eth0 up. but I can't access a url.

Can you point me in the right direction? What is going wrong?

Ok it's me again, still didn't figure out:

5. Install the module:

insmod e1000 <parameter>=<value>

what is my parameter and value?

I figured out:

6. Assign an IP address to the interface by entering the following, where
x is the interface number:

ifconfig ethx <IP_address>

my x = 0 making eth0 and the problem of SIOCSIFADDR: No such device ethx: unknown interface: no such device went away.

With that being said there are additional problems now:

7. Verify that the interface works. Enter the following, where <IP_address>
is the IP address for another machine on the same subnet as the interface
that is being tested:

ping <IP_address>

I didn't understand what was beeing asked for so I just typed www.yahoo.com and I'm not receiving any bytes only transmitting.

I tried to start ethereal by typing: ethereal & but I got an error message saying:
ethereal: Symbol pcap - version' has different size in shared object, consider relinking. I dont know if this has anything to do with my Lan not working but I thought I might share it with you.

Help me out if you can.

Thanks

Your default gateway and dns servers are most likely not configured correctly. Try to ping 66.94.230.37, that's the ip address of yahoo. Now that you have the driver loaded you may want to try the network gui tool.

http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/l...rk-config.html

good luck.

Check your /etc/resolv.conf, it should contain the dns servers ip address/addresses. It should look something like this.

Code:
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
Where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the ip address of the dns server.
good luck.

Hi PeaceDog,

I got the e1000 driver working properly. It took some time but I figured out what I was doing wrong. I was attempting to configure the ethernet interface witha static IP address instead of using DHCP Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol for my red hat 9.0 system. Once i installed the driver from scratch , i restarted the machine and kadzu found new hardware and then asked me how did I want to configure it. I then selected the DHCP option and opened Mozilla and started going to various URL's.

Thanks for your help, I think you provided me with some very useful exercises that made me more familiar with how to configure a LAN on Linux.
