Problem solved!
First, I should mention that the file given by the above poster is in fact a command to scan the PCI bus and tell you what is on it. In my Red Hat 8.0, it is actually found in /sbin/lspci.
I'm not sure what finegan above had in mind, but activating the ethenet device is very easy if you have the configuration tools installed on the desktop. There is actually a Network Device Control under the Systems Tools menu that will activate the device. It can also be activated from the Systems Settings -> Network window from my default desktop. So, my onboard ethernet at least is working, the sound can wait.
I confess I was a little spooked by these devices being 'onboard' (integrated with the motherboard).
