OK, I'll read up on the apendix stuff and see what gives,

I think we should not have done make oldconfig after the appendix stuff.

as they may be similar functions.

Talk to you soon.

Have a nice conf, wish I could get to one, maybe in the future.

<edit>
after reading that arch document, The howto is very thourough, if not complex.

It does not cover anything we have not. Just a different way.

Now I know you're using the "vanilla sources" from the Kernel.org, and not an ARCH .rpm package

We need to be carefull not to double handle (do things twice).

I'm back from the conference. Did you determine anything interesting?

Yeah, I probably should have explicitly mentioned that.

There do appear to be kernel packages in the Arch repository.
Searching for kernel26 with pacman yields the following:
Code:
pacman -Ss kernel26
core/kernel26 2.6.32.9-1 (base)
    The Linux Kernel and modules
core/kernel26-firmware 2.6.32.9-1 (base)
The included firmware files of the Linux Kernel
core/kernel26-headers 2.6.32.9-1
Header files and scripts for building modules for kernel26
I'm not sure if that's useful in this case or not.

Hi, sorry, I've been away.

No, not really now you have the kernel source code.

Have you been able to have another go at the directions I gave above, or with the arch tute you mentioned?

The problem with the vanilla sources is that it may not be configured with any particular patches used by Arch-Linux.

I have found with Mandriva that running make oldconfig is enough to get the source upto date with the installed kernel.

Then running make xconfig allows me to add and/or remove what I don't want. Like cpu freq scaling, And laptop features.(power save, etc).

And a few others.

I once posted a tute for kernel config and making....you may find it usefull, just disregard the realtime stuff.

Hi Glenn,

Sorry for the long delay. I've been busy lately.
In the interest of time, I decided to take the easy way out and get an old PCI sound card from a friend who had a spare lying around. That worked fairly well. Incidentally, the card that my friend gave me uses the same chip as my onboard audio controller (CMI8738).

Only after I installed the card did I notice that the "onboard PCI audio controller" option in BIOS was Disabled for some reason!
I have no idea how I missed that... >.>
Anyway, after I enabled that, my onboard audio device showed up in the output of lshw and lspci. I think that was actually the root of the issue, but I've decided to just continue using the card since it works and my friend went through the trouble of sending it to me.

Again, thank you for taking the time to help me with this issue. Despite my oversight of a simple solution, this has been a learning experience for me.

Regards,
Jake

I'm learning too, lol!

Glad to be of assistance. Any time.

Cheers, Glenn
