I am trying to install winXP for my uncle on an old harddrive I had laying around which used to have linux on it, but the winxp pro cd doesn't seem to re-create the master boot record.

after i go through the xp setup, and reboot it says "No Operating System Found".

I know this is a linux forum, but since xp isn't smart enough to re-write the MBR I figured I'd check here.

Anybody know how I can recreate the MBR? The winxp site has a 6-floppy download (i only have 3).

i ran fixmbr, did nothing for me.

i'm re-installing windows (for the 5th time tonight) on this drive...if that don't work, i'll try the fixboot

i should probably just buy a new hd and call it a night.

i have to start saying "no" to tech support for family members...constantly reformating hd's for male relatives with computers...i tell them to use firefox, even remove the ie icon completely, yet they still manage to get spyware installed.

don't know how many times i've mentioned it's their searching for porn that is the problem.
